Inclement Weather Halts “Europe’s Largest” Fireworks Display

A special task force has decided that the fireworks display planned for the August 20 national holiday in Budapest will be postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Task force head Zoltán Kovács sent a statement to news agency MTI that the task force and event organizers had decided it would not be safe to go on with the fireworks display after considering the most recent weather forecast and evaluating the current situation. The fireworks have been rescheduled for next Saturday night at 9:00pm.

The government announced at the end of June that “Europe’s largest” fireworks display would be held on Hungary’s national holiday, accompanied by a series of four-day celebrations.

However, a number of Hungarian towns and cities around the country called off their own plans for fireworks, citing budgetary concerns. [Magyar Hang]
