“We have defended the utility subsidies, and defended Hungarian families,” declared Prime Minister Viktor Orbán triumphantly in a short video posted to his Facebook page about the EU summit he attended on Thursday.
As the Prime Minister put it:
We were bushed after a long deliberation. We almost came to blows on the most important issue. It was on the issue of energy prices. We could not agree with each other. The Czechs, the Poles, the Slovaks and we Hungarians insisted on curbing the rise in energy prices, whether it be for electricity or gas. Speculators need to be taken out of the system, the utility subsidies have to be protected, and we can’t allow a new energy tax to be introduced, this time on homeowners and automobile drivers. The battle will continue.
