“The European Commission cannot report any positive developments about Hungary,” stated Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders at Wednesday’s session of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), which again addressed the situation on rule of law in Hungary.
As such, infringement proceedings have been launched against Hungary for violating joint EU values regarding academic freedom, as well as laws related to civil organizations, migrants, and “sexual minorities.”
Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi did not apparently respond to any of the charges, but compared the mood in LIBE’s session to George Orwell’s novel 1984. Speaking in the session, Hidvéghi said that by criticizing Hungarian laws, an “atmosphere of hate” had dominated the proceedings. [444]
