Compared to the same period last year, the January-September 2021 period showed a dramatic decline in Hungary’s population, according to the Central Statistical Office (KSH).
69,370 births were recorded in the first nine months of the year, which was 296 fewer than the same time last year. At the same time, 111,041 deaths were also recorded, which was 16,287 higher than the same nine-month period in 2020. This represents a 0.4% decrease in births and a 17% increase in deaths in a year-on-year comparison.
The increase in number of deaths and decrease in births means that Hungary’s population declined by 41,670 over the first nine months of the year, representing a 66% increase compared to the same period in 2020. This population decrease was seen in all parts of the country.
However, KSH’s data is slightly better for September 2021, and shows a smaller population decline than September of last year. [Index]
