Minister of Agriculture goes after “left-wing billionaire” László Bige

The back and forth between the government and entrepreneur László Bige continued with a video posted on social media by Minister of Agriculture István Nagy (pictured).

According to István Nagy, “the left-wing billionaire makes Hungarian agriculture impossible” by keeping the price of fertilizer artificially high through his company Nitrogénművek Zrt.

“For the past seven years, the major businessman has harmed not only Hungarian farmers, but all Hungarian consumers of bread, fruit, and vegetables,” said the minister.

Nitrogénművek Zrt. announced on Friday that the National Chamber of Agriculture had suggested the possibility of the state taking over the operation of its fertilizer plant at a meeting to which the company’s representatives had not been invited.

The President of the National Chamber of Agriculture said that farmers expect Hungarian fertilizers to remain within the country. “If the owner of Nitrogénművek Zrt., Mr. László Bige, continues in this way (with exporting fertilizer and increasing prices), more serious state intervention may be needed.” Nitrogénművek has claimed that it continues to sell fertilizers to Hungarian farmers at standard Central European market prices.

The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) recently imposed a fine totaling 11.5 billion Ft. (US $35.2 million) on Bige’s financial interests.

Márki-Zay: I’d love it if Viktor Orbán donated to my campaign

Péter Márki-Zay being interviewed

Opposition leader Péter Márki-Zay would be happy to accept campaign contributions from anyone, even from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, his expected opponent in next year’s elections.

“I would be elated if Viktor Orbán personally sent money into my campaign account,” the Hódmezővásárhely mayor told HírTV.

The pro-government station also asked Márki-Zay if he would even accept donations from businessman László Bige, who has been accused of bribery and embezzlement in connection with his firm Nitrogénművek. Bige recently announced his support for the democratic opposition’s leader, and may contribute financially as well.

In response, the Hódmezővásárhely Mayor stated that until there is a court-ordered verdict in the case that would compel him to return any campaign donations from Bige, he would be happy to receive funds from the businessman.

Márki-Zay also said that he would even receive money from George Soros, mentioning that his predecessor as mayor, Fidesz politician János Lázár, did so when he received 60 million Ft. for a project designed to integrate the town’s Roma minority.

In addition, the opposition’s candidate for Prime Minister recalled that the Hungarian-American businessman and philanthropist has supported Viktor Orbán with “unbelievable sums” of money in the past, and claimed that Fidesz is the only “Soros-mercenary” party in Hungary.

Businessman László Bige supports Márki-Zay, says Fidesz “wants to destroy” him

Speaking in an interview with Partizán Spartacus on Sunday evening, Nitrogénművek owner László Bige came out in support of united democratic leader Péter Márki-Zay in next year’s Parliamentary elections, saying that he would even support “his colorful cat over the current government.”

The fertilizer factory owner was recently fined 14 billion Forints (US $44.9 million) by the Economic Competition Office (GVH) for a breaking laws on competitiveness, but stated that the charge was “absolutely politically motivated.”

“They want to destroy me,” claimed Bige on GVH’s sanctions against him, which alleges that he formed a cartel with retailers.

The entrepreneur believes that democratic opposition leader Péter Márki-Zay would be a good choice for Hungary, as “the country finally, after 30 years, has an independent candidate for Prime Minister.” Bige added that he is willing to financially support the Hódmezővásárhely mayor’s candidacy as well.
