It first appeared that there would be fewer cases of Covid in the fourth wave of the pandemic compared to previous waves, writes Index, because of the protection provided by vaccines against the virus.
However, the situation has deteriorated alarmingly in the past few weeks, according to data from the National Public Health Center (NNK). And despite the availability of a vaccine, the fourth wave looks to be the most deadly yet for Hungary.
It still remains to be seen whether the new measures to fight the pandemic by the government, which came into force on Monday, will increase the vaccination rate. But regardless, hospitals in the next few weeks expect to face their toughest time yet since the start of the pandemic.
Aggregated data shows that 11,211 new Covid cases were registered in Hungary over the last weekend.
